While attending university, especially for those living on campus, students may feel overwhelmed by homework, bored if left with nothing to do, or lonely. This is often the case on weekends when there are no classes. Weekends at Viterbo University, or WAVU, hosts events on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays that may help students who are experiencing any of these things.
Madie Olson, a WAVU programming assistant, told the Lumen, “As college students, our weeks are so incredibly busy, but our WAVU events give students a chance to stop what they are doing and enjoy a fun activity, something they wouldn’t normally get to do.” Olson is a senior Religious Studies major with a Servant Leadership minor. She plans on going to graduate school for her Master’s of Divinity. At Viterbo, aside from being involved in WAVU, Olson is a Resident Assistant for sophomore apartments and works as both a tour guide and a tutor. “I was interested in becoming a WAVU programming assistant because I loved attending the events that the team put on each week,” Olson said. “When applications came out, I knew I wanted to apply and be a part of the team because I was already attending most of the events and I thought it would be fun to be behind the scenes of what goes on to make the events successful,” Olson said.
WAVU events give students a chance to take a break from class-related stressors and get to know other students while taking part in a variety of events. On Thursday, Jan. 29 from 6-8 p.m. in the Student Union, WAVU hosted their first event of the semester, which was Grocery BINGO and Block Snowman, followed by Roblox and Childhood Snacks on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 1-4 p.m. in Nursing Center 196.
Many events will be going on for Cabin Fever Week, Monday, Feb. 9 to Sunday, Feb. 15, such as Floor Hockey, Prom Corsage & Boutonniere Making, and Grab and Go—Blind Date with a Movie or Book. Multiple Grocery BINGO and Grab and Go events are planned for the rest of the semester, as well as a trip to the Mall of America on Saturday, April 11. To keep up with events, check the events tab on the WAVU website (https://www.viterbo.edu/weekends-vu).
Olson encourages students to attend WAVU events and talk to people that they do not know. Olson enjoys being a part of the WAVU team. “It’s fun to put on different events, but the friends that I have made on this team I know will last long after I graduate. This team truly supports and cares about me and I know that they are not just people I can go to for work advice, but also for life advice as well,” she said.
Additionally, WAVU is hiring. If a student is interested in applying, they can reach out to Corey Stilwell (cjstilwell@viterbo.edu) for more information.
