Viterbo University offers a range of clubs. The Lumen would like to use this section to highlight a club around campus each issue. This is new for the Lumen this year, and we thank you for allowing us to shine some light on clubs run by students, for the students, just as the Lumen is.
Alexa Kalscheur, the social media manager for the Education Club, stated, “We are all about building community and getting students involved on campus. We organize events, volunteer opportunities, and social activities that bring people together and make campus life more engaging. We also give members a chance to develop leadership skills, meet new people, and make a positive impact.”
Kalscheur has been a part of the Ed club for both her years at Viterbo, but this year stepped up and took on the role of social media manager. “Since the education department’s drastic shift this school year, we have found ourselves facing and overcoming many challenges, especially with the loss of our former club advisor and many other education professors and faculty. But, with great challenge comes great responsibility,” Kalscheur said.
The Education Club offers a variety of events at Viterbo. Recently, it held its annual Safe Trick or Treat, in which the team builds fake doors out of cardboard for children to come and trick or treat at. The event allows children to have a safe and positive environment to trick or treat and removes the worry from parents about whether their children are safe while they trick or treat. The event ran on Oct. 26 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. and saw a lot of children who came to trick or treat.
The Ed Club also hosts a lot of other events, such as the Polar Plunge and Lunch and Learns. At Lunch and Learns, the team brings in experienced education faculty from the La Crosse area to teach students about educational resources. As stated in the title, learning always comes with lunch.
The Ed Club would like students to know that the club is not limited to education majors. They meet in Murphy 400, and if students would like to attend, they may send a message to the Instagram: @viterbo.edclub.
When asked what Ed Club brings to Viterbo, Kalscheur said this: “We firmly aim to bring a welcoming and supportive environment for any majors, education or not, who seek a safe space to make connections, take part in service opportunities, and of course, learn new things. We take pride in the historical values of the education program, which was founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, where Viterbo University was originally established in 1890 to prepare sisters to teach in elementary schools.”
