Whether you’re a seasoned skier or someone who has never step foot in boots before, Viterbo University hosts Night on the Slopes, held February 2025 this year, which provides students the opportunity to ski and snowboard at Mt. La Crosse for a discounted price with their fellow peers. This includes a reduced price for lift tickets, ski or snowboard rentals, and a free one-hour beginner lesson.
With a profound love for the sport, Mercedes Kuhlmann gave insights regarding her experiences with skiing. She started skiing four years ago and has skied at Mt. La Crosse each year since. “What got me into skiing was the boredom of winter and my interest in starting new hobbies, so I have activities to get me through the winter,” explained Kuhlmann. Participating in winter activities can help the time go faster during dreadful winter months.
When asked if she has skied at other hills before, she stated she has skied at Fort McCoy in previous years. “The lift at Fort McCoy was completely different. They only had a tow rope.” Kuhlmann expressed her preference for the lift at Mt. La Crosse due to the whiplash of the tow rope. “The tow rope yanks really hard, and I think it makes it difficult for kids and beginners to use.” Besides Fort McCoy and Mt. La Crosse, Kuhlmann stated her dream ski destination is any resort in Colorado due to the beautiful scenery and hopes to ski there one way.
Kuhlmann conveyed her preference for skiing with her friends over her family: “I have skied with my friends and family. I enjoy skiing with both parties, but skiing with my friends who also enjoy getting on the slopes is more fun because they challenge me to try bigger slopes and jumps. When I go with my family, I try to push them to get better.” One’s experience skiing can be cultivated by those besides them. Kuhlmann also expressed her preference for skiing: “I prefer skiing over snowboarding because I get more nervous jumping off the lift while snowboarding.”
Challenges arise with any sport, and skiing is no exception. “The most challenging part of skiing for me is pushing myself to try bigger slopes and get over the nervousness of getting hurt,” stated Kuhlmann. This fear is common for many skiers, especially as they progress with their skill. There is a level of mental strength that must be required to push through self-doubt. Taking calculated risks is a part of this sports excitement, and skiers often have to remind themselves that progress comes with practice.
Skiing offers a chance to experience the outdoors in a way only a few other sports offer. The refreshing feeling of being outside during the winter months makes every run feel like an adventure. “The best part of skiing for me is getting to enjoy the day outside because I feel cooped up all winter and skiing allows me to still enjoy the weather and be outside,” said Kuhlmann.
La Crosse skiing enthusiasts are fortunate to have a ski hill right in their backyard. The rewarding sport is more than recreation for some; it fosters a sense of community and is a way to find joy in the outdoors. The hill closed for the season March 12, 2025; however, the following season is projected to open December 4, 2025.
