On the third floor of the Fine Arts Center at Viterbo University, January 20 through April 2 is the art show of Kevin Knopp, “Drawings and Paintings 2008-2014.” Kevin Knopp stands as a painter with a unique vision. Known for his “lyrical landscapes and sensitive still life,” Knopp draws inspiration from the often-overlooked beauty in our everyday surroundings. His work is heavily influenced by impressionism, both in technique and intent, using soft pastel color and Plein air painting techniques to capture the essence of his subjects.
The Viterbo University Art Gallery is proud to showcase Knopp’s artwork, providing a platform for the community to engage with high-quality art. This gallery not only features local artists like Knopp but also invites national talent to exhibit their work, creating a rich and diverse art experience for visitors.
The “Kevin Knopp: Drawings and Paintings 2008 – 2024” exhibition offers visitors a unique insight into Knopp’s creative process. Created during his travels as a piano tuner, the collection features drawings and paintings that evoke a sense of familiarity through their depiction of landscapes and architecture. Select pieces highlight Knopp’s journey from initial sketch observations to sophisticated paintings, showcasing his mastery of color and composition.
“The colors he has chosen to describe warm sunsets and blue skies are a relief for the cold days of the winter season,” art professor Kira Peters notes. Visitors to the gallery will be treated to a visual journey through Wisconsin’s serene landscapes.
Peters mentions the gallery invites everyone to join the artist reception on March 26 from 4-5 p.m. in the Viterbo University Gallery, followed by a lecture by Kevin Knopp in FAC 219 from 5-6 p.m. This event promises to be an enriching experience for art lovers and aspiring artists alike.
The Viterbo University Gallery continues to be a vital part of the community, advocating for the rich art culture of the region and providing a platform for artists like Kevin Knopp to share their work and inspire others.
To get a better understanding of how the community can support the gallery and its initiatives, Kira Peters says, “Viterbo University provides an opportunity for the community to engage in high-quality art shows by both and national artists, there are opportunities for students to exhibits their work through the annual All Student Show and Seniors shows”
The gallery also uses a variety of promotional methods to reach a wider audience. Peters notes, “We work with the Communications department for promotions from social media and local news sources, the art gallery is way to support and advocate for the rich art culture of our community.”
When asked what advice she would give to young artists or students interested in pursuing a career in the arts, Peters emphasized the importance of community engagement. “I would say come to the art receptions. Meet other artists, make connections within the community. Show your work and advocate for the importance of art in the community and schools,” she advises. “And keep making art and setting goals.”
By attending gallery events and networking with fellow artists, students can build a supportive network and gain inspiration for their own work. The Viterbo University Gallery plays a crucial role in this process, providing a platform for students to showcase their work and connect with the broader artistic community.
Looking ahead, the Viterbo University art committee is always open to new collaborative projects and partnerships with artists and institutions. “The art committee is always accepting proposals from artists and working on future schedules, keep an eye out for updates on the website and look for promotions around campus.”
