In his second year at Viterbo, head coach Terry McKinney has the Viterbo men’s and women’s bowling team “rolling” through the first months of the season. The V-Hawks are two months into their five-month season and have already proved just how dominant they can be.
For the men’s team, they have had three top five finishes this season. This includes a fourth-place finish at the Big Ole Open, a third-place finish at their second conference meet, and an impressive first place finish at the University of Wisconsin Stout open. In this tournament, the V-Hawks finished first of 12 teams for varsity, and first of three for the junior varsity squad. For Viterbo, Brayton Fandrich took home second place for tournament individuals with a total of 1001 pins through five games averaging 200.6. Nate Arias finished sixth individually knocking down a total of 949 pins bringing his average to 189.8. Austin Calmes brought home sixteenth place for the V-Hawks bringing down 872 total pins for an average of 174.4 pins. For the junior varsity squad, Dylan Sader placed 15th with 876 pins averaging 175.2, but Seth Bailey was not far behind with a 17th-place finish with 867 total pins for an average of 173.4.
The women’s team thrived through the first portion of the season as well. They also have three top five finishes, including a fifth-place finish at their second conference meet, a second-place finish at the Big Ole Open, and likewise an amazing first place finish at the UW-Stout open, making it a clean sweep for Viterbo University. In this tournament, the V-Hawks had four bowlers place in the top 10. Emily Newbauer took home the individual title of the tournament as well, totaling 940 pins for an average of 188 pins per game. Newbauer is currently ranked number 15 in the country for women’s bowling. Holly Santucci took third place individually, totaling 911 pins for an average of 182.2. Ceri Deacon placed sixth with a total of 835 pins for a 167 average. Lastly, Maddie Schwartz came home with ninth place totaling 799 pins for an average of 155.8.
Assistant coach Matt Wejrowski is ecstatic with how the V-Hawks have performed so far this season. They have exceeded expectations and are cruising in dominant fashion. Although they have been performing well, there are still goals they have. Wejrowski states, “We still want to keep improving as a whole. For the guys we are looking to win conference. We have been right there the whole time. For the women we look to continue winning and compete for conference.”
The Viterbo University men’s and women’s bowling teams both look to continue their tear for the rest of the season, but more specifically look toward their next invite in sunny Las Vegas, Nevada, for the Glen Carlson Invitational December 18.
